More Atlanta retail jobs will soon be available as a large department store expands.

Kohl’s is planning to open two new stores, in Canton and Milton, a move expected to create 300,000 jobs in Atlanta. The company says it’s looking to hire associates for customer service, department service, cash register operation, early morning stocking, truck unloading, housekeeping and evening signage and pricing updates.

Kohl’s is hosting a job fair Jan. 11 to 15 at The Best Western - Mountain Villa Inn and Suites in Canton and The Hilton Garden Inn - Atlanta North Point in Milton. Full- and part-time positions are available, according to an article by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Kohl’s, based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., operates 1,004 stores in 48 states, including 21 stores in the Atlanta area.

The new store openings are good news to Atlanta-area job seekers looking for work in an economy that has many jobs disappearing. The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area had a total non-farm employment of 2,422,000 workers during November 2008, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,433,700 workers during October 2008 and a 2.7 percent decrease from last year. The area had an unemployment rate of 7 percent during November, up from 6.7 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.

Georgia as a whole had a total non-farm employment of 4,064,400 workers during November, down from 4,094,400 workers during October and a 2.2 percent decrease from last year. The state had an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent during November, up from 6.9 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.
