Thousands of Atlanta Jobs Added in Recent Years
Although Atlanta’s economy has been slightly declining, in the long run the city has been able to move forward and add many new Atlanta jobs.
According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area had a total non-farm employment of 2,440,400 in July 2008, a decrease of only .2 percent from last year.
A Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce article states that in the last 20 years, Atlanta’s population has doubled and the city has become one of the top job producers in the country. In 2006, new Atlanta jobs totaled more than 60,000, and in 2005 created 70,000 jobs, ranking the city number two for overall job creation in the nation.
More recently, Atlanta has become home to UPS, GE Power Systems, Merial, Russell Corporation, Arby’s, Novelis, Newell Rubbermaid and Rayovac. The city has also seen growth in companies such as The Home Depot, CNN and Coca-Cola.
Atlanta ranks third in the nation with the most Fortune 500 companies. Also, the metro area accounts for about two-thirds of Georgia’s economy, 70 percent of the state’s job growth and 65 percent of its population growth.
“Atlanta’s international airport offers companies access to the world,” the article notes. “The state’s ports, rails and highways are first-class. Our research universities are on the cutting edge. And our quality of life is second to none. Combine that with the fact that the Southeast as a whole is the fastest growing region of the country, and the benefits of living and doing business in metro Atlanta-the nerve center of it all-are clear.”
The region’s core assets include:
- infrastructure as the city has the busiest international airport, railways, ports and highways
- intellectual capital as Atlanta is home to world-class research universities and technology companies
