Carbon Motors, currently based in Atlanta, recently announced that it plans to move its headquarters and production plant to Connersville, Ind. The company plans to invest $350 million in a 1.8 million-square-foot facility in Connersville, a 14,000 person town located between Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
The company, which originally hoped to keep its operation building police cars in Atlanta, will now be providing jobs to another state. Once production begins in 2012, Carbon Motors will employ 1,500 workers. The company already has 10,000 orders for cruisers.
According to an article by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia economic development officials had offered a 520-acre site in Hall County. The company then announced it had narrowed its search to Georgia, Indiana and South Carolina.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp has not yet finalized the details of its incentive package for the company. Carbon Motors plans to apply for a federal loan through the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program.
The loss of job opportunities in the Atlanta area will only add to the city’s declining economy. During June, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area saw its unemployment rate increase from 9.5 percent to 10.7 percent, which was higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.5 percent.
The area had a total non-farm employment of 2,304,100 workers during June, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,316,100 workers during May and a 5.5 percent decrease from last year.
