Atlanta Jobs Lost

Although the city’s unemployment rate staid level during April, more Atlanta jobs were lost as nine industries eliminated positions.

Atlanta’s unemployment rate remained at 9.1 percent during March and April, which is slightly higher than the national unemployment rate of 8.9 percent.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area had a total non-farm employment of 2,322,100 workers during April, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,323,800 workers during March and a 5.1 percent decrease from last year.

As is the case in most corners of the country, the construction industry took the biggest hit when comapred to last year. The area’s construction industry employed 107,100 workers during April, down from 108,800 workers during March and a 17.9 percent decrease from last year.

Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in jobs during April include:

  • mining and logging by 17.6 percent
  • manufacturing by 11.3 percent
  • trade, transportation and utilities by 5.7 percent
  • information by 4.4 percent
  • financial activities by 5.9 percent
  • professional and business services by 8.8 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by 2.3 percent
  • other services by 1.3 percent

Only two industries saw an over-the-year jobs increase. The education and health services industry employed 265,600 workers during April, up from 262,200 workers during March and a 2.2 percent increase from last year. The government industry employed 342,600 workers during April, down from 342,700 workers during March and a .4 percent increase from last year.
