First Data Corp. recently announced that it plans to relocate its global headquarters to Georgia, a process that will create 1,000 jobs in the metro Atlanta area. The jobs, to be added during the next three years, will support product development work.

According to an article by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the company is officially based in Greenwood Village, Colo., but the majority of First Data’s operations have been headquartered in Atlanta. The company employs about 750 workers in the area, including its CEO and CFO.

“We have an establishment of a core group of executives and business leaders in Atlanta,” Spokeswoman Elizabeth Grice said in the article, “it made sense for us to make the change.”

Grice also noted that the city is a hub for the payments industry and is home to many First Data customers. In fact, the company already formed a payment-processing venture in Atlanta earlier this summer. The venture, called Banc of America Merchant Services, will market credit, debit and prepaid cards as well as merchant loyalty, check and eCommerce payment processing.

When First Data moved to Colorado eight years ago, the company’s then-CEO Ric Duques described the company’s decision to relocate as “a natural progression” for the business, which already employed thousands in Greenwood Village.

In 2006, First Data spun off its subsidiary Western Union, a money transfer company that is now headquartered in Englewood, Colo. In 2007, private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. acquired First Data for about $29 billion.
