Atlanta Careers to be Lost Near 50,000
More than 50,000 workers will lose their Atlanta careers this year.
According to the recent U.S. Conference of Mayors study, Atlanta is expected to lose 50,900 jobs during Q4, making the city seventh among the top 10 places to lose jobs during 2009. The study was prepared by IHS Global Insight, according to an article by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
The Atlanta area is no stranger to job losses. During November 2008, the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area had a total non-farm employment of 2,422,000 workers, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 2,433,700 workers during October 2008 and a 2.7 percent decrease from last year.
And because more Atlanta jobs are being lost, the area’s unemployment rate continues to increase. The Atlanta area had an unemployment rate of 7 percent during November, up from 6.7 percent during October and higher than the national unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.
The study projects that overall, jobs will be lost in all but five of the country’s 363 metro areas. The areas expected to add jobs include: Anchorage, Alaska; St. George, Utah and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, Texas; while employment in Ithaca, N.Y. and Fairbanks, Alaska is expected to remain the same.
New York is expected to lose the most number of jobs after being highly affected by the crumbling financial industry. The state could lose about 181,000 jobs and its unemployment rate could increase to 7.6 percent from 6.1 percent last fall. At the same time, Los Angeles’ unemployment rate is expected to increase to 9.8 percent as 164,100 jobs are lost.
