Atlanta Biotech Jobs Could Increase
One company could be creating hundreds of Atlanta biotech jobs.
Dendreon Corp., which is based in Seattle, is considering an $80 million advanced manufacturing plant to be located on the south side of Atlanta. If created, the plant would create at least 300 jobs in the Atlanta area. Not only would the company’s presence in Atlanta create jobs, it also would increase the tax base.
A reputable biotech manufacturing plant also would improve the area’s reputation as a hot spot for science and medicine, according to an article by the Pudget Sound Business Journal. On top of that, it would help attract scientists and doctors to the area to help spur collaboration with local research universities. That means Dendreon’s location in Atlanta could ultimately help improve the area’s manufacturing industry, as well as the education and health services industry, both of which could use the help.
The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta area’s manufacturing industry employed 149,900 workers during June, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 150,200 workers during May and an 11.6 percent decrease from last year.
The area’s education and health services industry employed 264,900 workers during June, down from 268,600 workers during May, but a 3.5 percent increase from last year. And the new jobs would help Atlanta’s overall declining economy.
The area had a total non-farm employment of 2,304,100 workers during June, down from 2,316,100 workers during May and a 5.5 percent decrease from last year. Area unemployment numbers have not yet been released, but during May, the area saw its unemployment rate increase from 9 percent to 9.6 percent.
